
Today, April 27, Eleonora Vasilachi, Head of Directorate at the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, represents the Republic of Moldova in the regional seminar for the CIS countries and Georgia dedicated to the International Girls in ICT Day. The video conference event is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in the Area Office located in Moscow, Russian Federation.
At the beginning of the seminar the video message of Brahima Sanou, Director of Telecommunication Development Bureau, was transmitted. Vera Soloviova, the representative of the Regional Office for CIS countries at ITU, emphasized that “Girls in ICT” is an initiative launched six years ago and is celebrated every year in order to create a global environment that encourages women to choose a career in the area of information and communication technology development. Furthermore, the initiative focuses on promoting such actions as ensuring equal employment conditions for women in IT and eliminating gender stereotyping, including informatics in the school curricula, raising teacher’s qualification in technical fields and other relevant actions.
In this context Eleonora Vasilache specified that according to the IT Career Support Program of the Government of the Republic of Moldova, campaigns to promote women, who see their future in IT, Career Fairs, Doors Open Day, etc. are conducted under the aegis of the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications. Also, a number of projects and initiatives in this direction are being implemented in the Republic of Moldova jointly with the development partners and National Association of Private ICT Companies. At the same time, the Government has developed a number of mechanisms to support the IT companies, by attracting donors and private capital to finance small business in the IT sphere, inclusively.
Eleonora Vasilache specified that the number of girls studying information technologies doubled as compared to 2010. The number of girls, who chose a relatively new specialty, namely “Information Security”, increased by 20%. Currently, girls represent 19 percent of the total number of IT students. The share of girls among the students studying information technologies is high - about 33 percent, and IT management - 26.8 percent. At the same time, about 17 percent are students, who chose a profession in Radio and Telecommunications area.
According to the statistical data for the year 2016, about 43% of the total number of employees in the IT sector of the Republic of Moldova are women, and in telecommunications and postal services sector this indicator represents 63%.
